Year 1 - Autumn 1

Welcome to Year 1

Hello from your class teacher:  Mrs Norton
Our fantastic TAs are Mrs Allen and Mrs Amissale in the mornings and Ms Potter in the afternoons.  Mrs Shores will be leading our Read Write Inc reading programme and Mrs Illing will be coming in on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon to also help with our learning.

Our learning journey this half term...

This term our learning challenge topic is Where did/do the wheels on the Bus go? This is mainly a geography and history topic and we will be looking at travel in the present and past as well as how our locality has changed over the years.  We will be learning about the country and capital cities of the United Kingdom and we will start our ongoing work on seasons and weather. We will also be designing and making our own moving vehicles and music and ICT are included in the timetable each week

In Maths we will be starting our first look at place value (just within 10 to start with) followed by addition and subtraction (also within 10).  Your help at home is crucial! Anything you can do (even for just 5 minutes a day) will help. Maybe show your child some coins and get them to recognise them and pay for some shopping. Talk about telling the time to o'clock and half past and at what time we do different things during the day. Little things like this will be a huge help!

In English we will be basing our narrative writing around the story of The Naughty Bus and traditional fair tales.  There will be weekly Guided Reading comprehension sessions as well as daily phonics work.   We finish off the term with writing instructions for how to make a moving vehicle.

English
There will be a daily phonics lesson with some reading activities followed by writing activities and developing a rich vocabulary.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
We will be learning to combine words to make sentences, to use full stops, capital letters and finger spaces and begin to use exclamation marks and question marks correctly. This term we will also be looking at the prefix un- to make opposite words (eg tidy - untidy); adding the suffix -s or -es to make plurals and the suffix -ed for past tense verbs.
Homework
Reading - Please hear your child read every night (10 minutes would be great!), talking about the book as much as possible and discussing what is happening and predicting what might happen. Please sign the log book and we will change the books on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Mathletics/Timestables Rock Stars/Literacy Planet- activities are available for each class for children to practise. Also - please practise the One Minute Maths challenges - examples can be found on the school website under the curriculum tab in the Maths section.
Our RE Learning

In RE, we will start with the theme of Creation for the first 4 weeks followed by 2 weeks learning about Prayers, Saints and Feasts.  In every area of the curriculum we incorporate elements of Catholic Social Teaching and if you would like to know more about Catholic Social Teaching, then please click on the link below.

PE Days

We will have two PE sessions per week - most weeks these will be on a Thursday and Friday, however, this may not always be the case due to timetabling.   It is important that your child has their kit in school every day. Please ensure that all your child’s kit is named and that plimsolls are fastened by velcro and not laces. They should leave their kit in school and take it home half termly to be washed.

This term we will be practising throwing and catching a ball and starting to learn about dance and its various components.
