Year 1 Autumn 2

Welcome to Year 1
Hello from your class teacher:  Mrs Norton
Our fantastic TAs are Mrs Allen and Mrs Illing in the mornings and Ms Potter in the afternoons.  Mrs Shores will be leading our Read Write Inc reading programme.
Our learning journey this half term...
This term our learning challenge topic is Would the Beatles have won X Factor? This is mainly a history topic and we will be looking  at the lives of significant individuals in Britain's past who have contributed to our nation's achievements.  We will carry on our ongoing work on seasons and weather and will be learning about Van Gogh and specifically the painting Starry Night as part of our etwinning project with a primary school in Belgium. On Fridays the children will have Science, Art, PSHE and PE lessons.
In Maths we will be carrying on with Addition and Subtraction before moving on to Geometry (shape) and then returning to Place Value (within 20).   Every day there is an opportunity to practise maths fluency skills.  Your help at home is crucial! Anything you can do (even for just 5 minutes a day) will help. Maybe show your child some coins and get them to recognise them and pay for some shopping. Talk about telling the time to o'clock and half past and at what time we do different things during the day. Little things like this will be a huge help!
In English we will be starting with a look at poetry and then move on to writing different non-fiction texts - recounts, information texts but there will still be opportunities to write stories.  There will be  Guided Reading comprehension sessions as well as daily phonics work and spellings will be tested every Monday and new ones given out on a Tuesday.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
We will be learning to combine words to make sentences, to use full stops, capital letters and finger spaces and begin to use exclamation marks and question marks correctly. This term we will also be looking at the prefix un- to make opposite words (eg tidy - untidy); adding the suffix -s or -es to make plurals and the suffix -ed for past tense verbs.
Reading - Please hear your child read every night (10 minutes would be great!), talking about the book as much as possible and discussing what is happening and predicting what might happen. Please sign the log book and we will change the books on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Spellings to learn will be handed out on Tuesday each week and tested on Mondays.
Mathletics/Timestables Rock Stars/Literacy Planet- activities are available for each class for children to practise. Also - please practise the One Minute Maths challenges - examples can be found on the school website under the curriculum tab in the Maths section.

Our RE Learning
In RE, we will start with a week looking at Islam and then move on to Sacraments - especially the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Healing the Sick.  Then, of course, it will be Advent followed by Christmas.
PE Days

We will have two PE sessions per week - most weeks these will be on a Thursday and Friday, however, this may not always be the case due to timetabling.   It is important that your child has their kit in school every day. Please ensure that all your child’s kit is named and that plimsolls are fastened by velcro and not laces. They should leave their kit in school and take it home half termly to be washed.

This term we will be practising running and jumping and gymnastics skills.
