Our Neighbourhood

St Joseph's is situated in the area of Devonport in Plymouth. Devonport was formerly a town in its own right and is famous for being the home of Devonport Naval Base. The school is on part of the site of the former Raglan Barracks. We have a number of great resources on our door step. We are linked directly to our St Joseph's Church. Right outside our front gate is St Aubyn's Church which has been converted into the new library for Devonport. Less than a minute's walk from our side gate is the Music Zone which provides music education for children from all over Plymouth. Backing onto the Music Zone is Brickfields Sports Complex, the home of Plymouth Albion, Plymouth Athletics Club, an indoor sports centre as well as ample floodlit outdoor facilities.
Within two minutes we can be in the historic Devonport Park which has undergone a multi million pound refurbishment programme. On the way you will pass the Devonport Playhouse, a theatre again recently refurbished which is the main home for amateur productions for groups throughout Plymouth.
Wonderful views of Plymouth Sound are just a five minute walk away in Mount Wise. In this area there are two open air swimming pools which are free to use during the summer months. Seymour House education centre is also situated here which has the only Camera Obscura in the country. This camera allows you to see spectacular images of the goings on on the Sound.
Two major housing developments have recently been built within walking distance of the school. The Vision development is on the site of the former South Yard of Devonport Dockyard. Mount Wise 'Village by the Sea' is on the site of Admiralty House. The 'Village' features an authentic village cricket green which houses Plymouth Cricket Club.
