St Joseph's Catholic Primary School

Blue Group

At St Joseph's, we are proud to use Read Write Inc as our systematic phonics and early reading programme. Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI provides a structured and engaging approach that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently while developing a love of reading from an early age.

Through daily lessons, pupils are taught to recognise sounds, blend them into words, and build confidence in both reading and writing. The programme supports every child at their own pace, ensuring that no one is left behind and that all children experience success.

By using Read Write Inc., we aim to give our pupils the strongest possible foundation in literacy, setting them up for future learning and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

In the Blue Group...

Children in the Read Write Inc. Blue Group are building on their growing reading fluency and beginning to develop greater comprehension and expression. At this stage, they are confident with many common sounds and are learning more complex sound combinations (such as alternative spellings for the same sound). They read longer storybooks that include a wider range of vocabulary and sentence structures, helping them to practise reading with increasing speed, accuracy, and understanding.

During writing activities, pupils learn to use a wider variety of words and sentence openers, apply correct punctuation, and spell more challenging words using their phonics knowledge. They also begin to write short compositions that show a clear sense of structure and purpose.

By the end of the Blue Group, children are becoming fluent, expressive readers and more confident, independent writers, well prepared to move on to the next stage of Read Write Inc.
