Physical Education

Our PE days are Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure that your child arrives in school wearing their school PE kit.  The children should also wear their usual school jumper or cardigan on these days. Sometimes, PE will take place outside and children will be able to wear hats and coats until they have warmed up for this fun, important and compulsory area of school life.
Phonics
In year 2 we follow Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics. All staff involved in the programme have had specific training to be able to teach the daily lessons. The children read and spell for 40 minutes each day and are grouped according to their reading fluency and word recognition. The aim by the end of year 2 is for children to be moving on from phonics to guided reading lessons as confident and fluent readers.
Please see the linked phonics page below for more information.
English/Writing and Guided Reading

Throughout the course of Autumn 2 our English writing text will be The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. Please refer to the document below to see more.
When children move on from their phonics journey they join our Guided Reading group. The children will focus on comprehension skills as well as working on their confidence and fluency. Our current text is The Tear Thief by Carol Anne Duffy. Please see the document below for more information.
Maths
Throughout Autumn 2 we will be looking at the 1st Power Maths book and exploring the topics of additon and subtraction as well as the properties of shapes. Please see the document below for more information.

Homework

Spellings and Maths-

Maths and spelling homework will be set every Friday and should be returned back to school throughout the week, before the following Thursday. The homework set will always be linked to our learning that we are doing in school (see the maths document).
For spelling we follow a programme called EdShed, the children learn a new spelling rule each week. The weekly homework set consolidates our classroom learning (see the spelling document at the below for more detail). If your child is struggling with their home learning, please speak to me and I will support you/them in any way that I can.

Reading -

In year 2, children are expected to be reading at home at least 4xs a week. This can be any reading material and then recorded by parents in their reading diaries.

If your child still follows the Read Write Inc phonics programme please ensure that you are engaging with this at home. Please make sure that the books are coming to school daily as we read throughout the day.

Religious Education
During this half term, we will be learning about our R.E unit called 'Prophecy and Promise'. Prophecy refers to "a message of divine truth delivered by a person called a prophet, often revealing God's will or predicting future events". In this unit, we will explore different important figures from the bible who were spoken to by God and lived their lives, to share his message (prophets). We will look at different scriptures teaching us about prophets and how they relate to our world, today. Please see the document below for more information.
