Grey Group

At St Joseph's, we are proud to use Read Write Inc as our systematic phonics and early reading programme. Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI provides a structured and engaging approach that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently while developing a love of reading from an early age.

Through daily lessons, pupils are taught to recognise sounds, blend them into words, and build confidence in both reading and writing. The programme supports every child at their own pace, ensuring that no one is left behind and that all children experience success.

By using Read Write Inc., we aim to give our pupils the strongest possible foundation in literacy, setting them up for future learning and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

In Grey Group...

Children working in the Read Write Inc. Grey Group are developing advanced reading and writing skills as they move towards becoming confident, fluent, and independent readers.

In this group, pupils read longer and more complex texts that deepen their understanding of vocabulary, inference, and comprehension. They learn to read with expression, accuracy, and fluency, showing a real understanding of what they are reading. Writing lessons focus on building rich sentences, using ambitious vocabulary, and structuring ideas clearly in different text types. Children also continue to refine their spelling, punctuation, and grammar, applying these skills in their independent writing.

By the end of the Grey Group, pupils are ready to move beyond the Read Write Inc. programme, equipped with strong literacy skills and a genuine enthusiasm for reading and writing.

In Grey Group, the children are currently building their confidence in recognising, reading and using the set 3 sounds.
