Green Group

At St Joseph's, we are proud to use Read Write Inc as our systematic phonics and early reading programme. Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI provides a structured and engaging approach that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently while developing a love of reading from an early age.

Through daily lessons, pupils are taught to recognise sounds, blend them into words, and build confidence in both reading and writing. The programme supports every child at their own pace, ensuring that no one is left behind and that all children experience success.

By using Read Write Inc., we aim to give our pupils the strongest possible foundation in literacy, setting them up for future learning and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

In Green Group...

Children in the Read Write Inc. Green Group are beginning to read with growing confidence and fluency as they secure their knowledge of Set 1 sounds and start to use some Set 2 sounds. At this stage, pupils practise blending sounds together to read words more quickly and smoothly, moving away from sounding out each individual letter. They learn to recognise familiar words on sight and begin to read short storybooks with understanding and expression.

 Vocabulary development is an important focus, as children discuss the meaning of new words and answer simple questions about what they have read. In writing sessions, pupils use their phonics knowledge to spell words accurately and to write short sentences that make sense, remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops.

 By the end of the Green Group, children are becoming more confident, accurate readers and beginning to write independently, ready to progress to more complex sounds and stories in the next stage of Read Write Inc.

In Green Group, the children are currently building their confidence in recognising, reading and using the set 1 and 2 sounds.

These are the Set 1 Sounds written with one letter:
