St Joseph's Catholic Primary School

Foundation

Welcome to Foundation

At St Joseph's we believe that children learn best through play in an environment that supports them to be both independent and collaborative whilst celebrating their own creativity and curiosity.

We promote the children's personal social and emotional development to ensure the children feel safe, happy and enthusiastic to learn.

Our mission statement plays an important role in fulfilling our hopes and expectations for the children in our class. The children are given autonomy of their own learning in a communication friendly space.

Should you need any further information, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

General Information

Our door is always open for you to come and talk to us about your child. The main way in which we communicate with you is through Class Dojo. I am available each morning and at the end of day. My time out of class for planning is on a Wednesday afternoon and every other Tuesday afternoon however I am always available via email or Class Dojo. If you have a concern which may take a little longer to discuss I'll arrange with you a time when we can meet.
Please note that I will not respond to Dojo messages or emails past 6pm but will happily pick these up the following morning.
Foundation do not follow the National Curriculum but instead follow Development matters along with the
Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework

PE

Our PE day is Wednesday. Please make sure your child arrives in school wearing their school PE kit. The children should also wear their usual school jumper or cardigan on these days. Sometimes, PE will take place outside an the children will be able to wear hats and coats until they have warmed up for this fun, important and compulsory area of school life.

Outdoor provision

At St Joseph's we are incredibly lucky to have The Pioneers project which is an outside curriculum run by Mr Driscoll. The children will take part in this each week on a Wednesday afternoon. The children potentially will get a bit wet and muddy, if you would like to bring a pair of named wellies in and leave them with us for the term, please feel free to do so.

RWI

We follow Read Wrice Inc. phonics as a school. We teach a new sound every day, followed by sound recognition, oral blending learning to blend stepsand then a small writing task.  RWI teaches a very specific way of reading sounds, pronouncing sounds and then blending those sounds together to read and write words.

Reading at home

Sharing books together is a really important part of helping your child to develop and learn. As the term progresses we will begin to give the children a book to take home each week, once returned, the children can swap their book for another one. For Phonics, we follow the Read Write Inc scheme; your child will bring home a RWI reading book alongside their reading for pleasure book. We ask that children read with you at least four times a week which should be recorded in their reading records. Reading for pleasure books along with a small homework task will be given out on Friday, to be returned on the following Thursday.

Religious Education

This term we will be looking at 'Prophecy and Promise'. We will explore the Nativity story and understand more of Jesus' importance as the Son of God. The focus of this branch of our learning is for us to understand that after God had created our wonderful world he continues to show his love by sending his son Jesus to live with us.

Snacks

The children are given free snacks in foundation. We vary these throughout the week but it will always be fruit or vegetables. The children are more than welcome to bring in their own healthy snack from home too. Please ensure the children bring a named water bottle with them every day.

Uniform

Please ensure that all children's uniform is named.

If you need any help with purchasing uniform, please speak to Mrs Penelrick our Parent Support Advisor who will be happy to help you.
